How long have you been in business?
I (Dr. John Ellis) have been practicing since 1997, and my partner, Dr. T. Bruce Blair, has been practicing since 1980. My practice was started in El Paso in 1940 by Dr. R. Hugh Hall. Dr. Blair was partners with long time El Paso Optometrist Dr. Darwin Rice. We merged our practices in 2003.
What is your primary product or service?
We provide a full range of eye and vision care: Examinations, glasses, contact lenses, LASIK consultation and comanagement, and diagnosis and treatment of eye disease are some of the most common services we provide.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have worn glasses and contact lenses all my life. When I became interested in the healthcare field, I naturally gravitated toward eyecare, as that is the field I had the most contact with.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
At University Vision Centre, our goal is to provide our patients with the best eyecare experience they have ever had. We go to great lengths to provide the best customer service, examinations, materials, and facilities in El Paso.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one centrally located office. We recently moved our office into a much larger space (in the same shopping center) where we now have additional resources to serve our patients, but we do not anticipate opening additional locations. We do not want to dilute our resources and risk delivering substandard service and products.
Provide detailed directions to your location
The office is located near UTEP, at the corner of Mesita/Sunbowl and Mesa, in the University Hills Shopping Plaza. From I-10, take the Executive Center Exit and take Executive Center Blvd. to Mesa. Turn right on Mesa, and the office is approximately a half-mile down on the left side, just across from Luby's.

Which areas do you service?
Because of our central location, we have patients from all over El Paso, Southern New Mexico and Northern Mexico.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The practice is owned by Drs. T. Bruce Blair and John L. Ellis II. Although the doctors are very involved with day to day operations, they also rely heavily on their office manager, Luis Castanon to manage operations.
